Description
The immobilizable polar tracer AlexaFluor®488 Biocytin, which is impermeable to cells, combines the green fluorescent AlexaFluor®488 fluorophore with biotin and aldehyde-immobilized primary amines. Polar tracers are commonly used to study cell-cell and cell-liposome fusion and membrane permeability and transport through gap junctions or cellular uptake during pinocytosis. This water-soluble tracer can be introduced into cells by whole-cell patch clamp, iontophoresis, osmotic solubilization of osmotic vesicles or similar methods. Biotin can be used for the detection and subsequent amplification of enzyme-modified streptavidin, including horseradish (HRP) and alkaline phosphatase (AP), and can be used with TSA and ELF technologies, respectively.

AlexaFluor® Biocytin can be used as low molecular weight, membrane-impermeable cell tracers that can fix aldehydes. Compared with cell tracers derived from other spectrally similar fluorophores, they have brighter fluorescence and higher Light stability.
