Axons are one of the two types of cytoplasmic protrusions from neuronal cell bodies capable of conducting electrical impulses called action potentials transmitted away from the nerve cell body. Therefore, the function of axons is to transmit information to different neurons, muscles and glands. The difference between an axon and a dendrite lies in several characteristics, including the shape (the dendrite is usually tapered, while the axon usually maintains a constant radius), the length (the dendrite is limited to a small part of the cell body, and the axon can be longer) and function (dendrites receive signals, while axons transmit them).
