Beta Amyloid Antibody Products

The primary component of amyloid plaques identified in the brains of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients is amyloid beta, often known as Aβ or Abeta, which is a group of protein peptides produced when β- and γ-secretases cleave the amyloid precursor protein (APP). Amyloid plaques are formed by the spontaneous assembly of monomeric Aβ into soluble Aβ oligomers, that aggregate to form insoluble fibrils.

Aβ Overview

Aβ is 40-43 amino acids long and can be produced by a variety of cells. They are circulating in the brain's interstitial fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, and blood. While some Aβ are in a free state, the majority are attached to chaperone molecules. The Aβ1-40 and Aβ1-42 subtypes are the most prevalent in humans. Aβ1-40 is found at levels 10 and 1.5 times greater in human cerebrospinal fluid and blood, respectively, than Aβ1-42. Aβ1-42 exhibits higher toxicity and aggregation potential, resulting in the formation of the core of Aβ precipitation and inducing neurotoxic consequences.

Aβ Immunotherapy

Scientists are currently developing therapies to treat individuals at risk for AD before or in the early stages of cognitive decline, hoping to prevent or delay the onset of the disease. These include Aβ immunotherapy, which uses anti-Aβ antibodies (or fragments thereof) to reduce Aβ aggregation and deposition in the AD brain. Anti-Aβ antibodies can function in three ways:

• By decreasing the generation of Aβ
• By preventing Aβ from aggregating or breaking down Aβ aggregates
• By neutralizing toxic Aβ aggregates
