Ion Channel Receptor Related Research Reagents
Ion channel receptors are multimeric proteins located on the plasma membrane. Each of these proteins can arrange themselves, forming channels or pores that extend from one side of the membrane to the other, allowing ions to pass through the channel pores. Ion channels control membrane current by opening and closing their channels to establish membrane potential. In the ion channel, ions are transported along the concentration gradient, while the ion pump / carrier is actively transporting ions against the ion gradient. Their functions include establishing quiescent membrane potentials, shaping action potentials and other electrical signals by controlling ion flow across cell membranes, controlling ion flow across secretory and epithelial cells, and regulating cell volume.
Ion channels can be classified according to their different gating methods or the type of ions passing through the channel.
Classification by gating:
Ion channels can be classified by gating, that is, different stimuli that open and close channels. It can be divided into:
Voltage-gated ion channels: the opening or closing depends on the voltage gradient on the plasma membrane. It includes voltage-gated sodium channels, voltage-gated calcium channels, voltage-gated potassium channels, cyclic nucleotide-gated channels, and voltage-gated proton channels.
Ligand-gated ion channels: the opening or closing depends on the binding of the ligand to the channel.
G protein-gated ion channel: a family of transmembrane ion channels in neurons and atrial muscle cells, which are directly controlled by G protein.
Classification by ion type:
- Chloride channel
- Potassium channel
- Sodium channels (NaVs)
- Calcium channels (CaVs)
- Proton channel
- Non-selective cation channel
- Transient receptor potential (TRP) channel
