Neurotransmitter Receptor Related Research Reagents

Neurotransmitter receptors, also known as neuroreceptors, are membrane receptor proteins that are activated by neurotransmitters. In neurons, presynaptic neurotransmitter receptors control neurotransmitters that flow into the synaptic space. The neurotransmitter receptors in post-synaptic cells receive signals from presynaptic terminals, and respond to electrical signals by modulating the activity of ion channels. These neurotransmitters can crash into the cell membrane, bind to their corresponding receptors and trigger other events within the cell. Therefore, neurotransmitter receptors are part of a molecular mechanism that regulates signals propagation along axons.

There are two main types of neurotransmitter receptors: ion channel receptors and metabolic receptors.

Neurotransmitter Receptor

Ion channel receptors, also known as ligand-gated ion channels, are a class of receptors that are regulated by specific neurotransmitters. The binding of the ligand to the receptor opens or closes the channel, thereby controlling the ions flowing into the cell (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Cl-). They can be excited by neurotransmitters (ligands) such as glutamic acid and aspartic acid. These receptors can also be inhibited by neurotransmitters such as GABA and glycine.

Neurotransmitter Receptor

Metabolic receptors are G protein-coupled receptors. G protein-coupled receptors are neither excited nor inhibited. They can indirectly affect the activities of neurotransmitters and ion channels through the regulation of signaling pathways by second messengers. G protein-coupled receptors have a variety of functions, such as the regulation of excitatory and inhibitory ion channels or triggering signal cascades to release calcium from intracellular storage. Most neurotransmitter receptors are G protein-coupled receptors.
