Description
β-synuclein is a member of the synuclein protein family. The other two members are α and γ-synuclein. Each protein is encoded by a different but related gene. α-synuclein was originally isolated as a major synaptic vesicle-related protein from the electrical organs of fish. Direct homologs of α-synuclein have been found in all vertebrates. Later studies linked the expression of α-synuclein to several human brain pathologies, making it the main component of Lewy bodies in Parkinson's disease. β-synuclein, as a protein that is obviously related to α-synuclein but different from α-synuclein, was isolated as a component of the brain of normal people and patients. The human β-synuclein molecule has a size of 134 amino acids, while the α-synuclein molecule has a size of 140 amino acids, and the n-terminal part of the two molecules is actually the same, while the c-terminal region is more variable.
