Description
Myelin basic protein is 30 kinds of myelin proteins found in the central nervous system. Can induce experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE), a t-lymphocyte-mediated delayed hypersensitivity disease; although each animal seems to respond to different fragments of 170 amino acid peptides. Four different subtypes were identified by cDNA cloning. Except for the insertion or deletion of the two peptide fragments encoded by exons 2 and 5, these four variants are all the same. Myelin basic protein is expressed in the white matter myelin of oligodendrocytes, brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves, but less expressed in gray matter.
MBP plays an important role in forming and stabilizing this compact multi-layer double-layer structure. In vitro, MBP is suitable as a substrate for many protein kinases, including ERK and p38 MAP kinase that phosphorylate MBP at T98.
