Product Overview

Description

Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) belongs to a class of apolipoproteins, which combine with lipids to form lipoproteins. ApoE is produced by macrophages in the liver and peripheral tissues and can regulate cholesterol metabolism. In the central nervous system, ApoE is mainly produced by astrocytes and plays an important role in transporting cholesterol to neurons through ApoE receptors. ApoE has three main isoforms corresponding to the three alleles (ApoE2, ApoE3 and ApoE4), which differ by only one or two amino acids at positions 112 and 158. ApoE4 is known to be one of the largest genetic risk factors for advanced Alzheimer's disease. In addition, ApoE4 is also associated with several other diseases, such as atherosclerosis, cognitive impairment and multiple sclerosis.
