Description
The protein 9 (CARD9) containing the caspase recruitment domain is a member of the CARD protein family, which plays a regulatory role in apoptosis. CARD9 is an adaptor protein that mediates downstream signaling of C-type lectin receptors (CLR) (such as Dectin-1, Dectin-2 and Mincle). CARD9 is also involved in downstream signaling of the retinoic acid-inducible gene I receptor (RIG-1) family. After stimulating the receptor, CARD9 is phosphorylated and forms a tri-molecular complex with B-cell leukemia-lymphoma 10 (Bcl10) and mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue 1 (Malt1), thereby activating the typical NF-κB pathway and causing pro-inflammatory Sex-induced cytokines, including IL-6, IL-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF). It has been suggested that CARD9 plays an important role in anti-fungal host defense, because mice lacking CARD9 are more susceptible to pathogenic fungi.
