Description
Amyloid β (Aβ or amyloid β) represents a peptide of 36-43 amino acids in length. It is the main component of amyloid plaques in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease. Important. The peptide is produced by amyloid precursor protein (APP), which is cleaved by certain enzymes to produce Aβ. Aβ molecules can aggregate to form oligomers (called "seeds"), and it is thought that they can induce other Aβ molecules to also take the form of misfolded oligomers, resulting in a chain reaction similar to a virus infection. The seeds or the resulting amyloid plaques are toxic to nerve cells. The tau protein, another protein involved in Alzheimer's disease, also forms virus-like misfolded oligomers, and there is evidence that misfolded Aβ can induce misfolding of tau.
