Target Overview

Superoxide Dismutase 1 (SOD1) is a vital antioxidant enzyme that is abundant in the cytoplasm of most cells. Its primary physiological role is to protect the cell from oxidative damage by catalyzing the conversion of toxic superoxide radicals into molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. While crucial for cellular health, over 150 different mutations in the SOD1 gene have been identified as a cause of familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). These mutations are thought to confer a toxic gain-of-function, leading to protein misfolding, aggregation, and the progressive death of motor neurons.
