Target Overview

Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin 2 (TRPM2) is a non-selective cation channel that functions as a crucial cellular sensor for oxidative stress. It is activated by intracellular ADP-ribose, which is produced under conditions of oxidative stress and DNA damage, leading to an influx of calcium (Ca2+) and other cations into the cell. By translating oxidative stress signals into changes in intracellular calcium levels, TRPM2 is involved in a wide range of physiological and pathological processes, including immune responses, insulin secretion, and programmed cell death. Its role in mediating neuronal death following ischemia makes it a target of interest for neuroprotective research.
