Description
Alpha-synuclein is a protein encoded by the SNCA gene in humans. It is high in the brain, but low in the heart, muscle and other tissues. In the brain, alpha-synuclein is mainly found at the tips of neurons with special structures called presynaptic terminals. In these structures, α-synuclein interacts with phospholipids and proteins. The presynaptic terminal releases chemical messengers called neurotransmitters from compartments called synaptic vesicles. The release of neurotransmitters transmits signals between neurons and is essential for normal brain function.
