Description
Tau is a protein associated with microtubules in neurons. It can stabilize the microtubules in axons. Tau protein is hyperphosphorylated and forms insoluble aggregates called neurofibrillary tangles in Alzheimer's disease. Accumulation of abnormal tau aggregates can cause cytotoxicity, which is described as a model of acquired function of toxicity. The Tau gene undergoes alternative splicing, resulting in six different subtypes. The Tau-383 subtype contains exon 10, but lacks exons 2 and 3.
