Description
The primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS is gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-gated ion channels. Five protein subunits, typically,, and or, make up a typical GABA ion channel's pentameric shape, which comes together to form a central ion-conducting hole through the cell membrane. Because different combinations produce distinct effects, the precise subunit composition is particularly crucial.
