Neurotransmitter transporters are a class of membrane transporters that cross neuronal cell membranes. Their main function is to carry neurotransmitters through the membranes to specific cellular and subcellular locations. They are present in the plasma membrane of neurons and glial cells, and usually rely on an electrochemical gradient across the membrane to provide energy for neurotransmitter transport.

Currently, more than 20 members have been identified in the neurotransmitter transporter family. They have proven to be important targets for the discovery of drugs in the central nervous system, especially antidepressants. For example, norepinephrine and serotonin reuptake transporters are the main targets of antidepressants. GABA is a pharmacological target for the treatment of epilepsy and schizophrenia. Narcotics, such as cocaine, target such transporters as well. In general, neurotransmitter transporters possess important clinical significance.
