Description
A subunit of the pentameric inhibitory glycine receptor, which mediates post-synaptic inhibition of the central nervous system, is the protein that this gene encodes. Glycine mediates the inhibitory effect of glycine through ligand-gated chloride channels called glycine receptors. They are widely dispersed in the central nervous system, particularly in the brainstem, spinal cord, and hippocampus.
