Many human and animal cells have an ion channel called TRPA1 on their plasma membranes. In humans and other mammals, this ion channel is well recognised as a pain, cold, and itching sensor. It is also a sensor for environmental stimuli that elicit other protective reactions like tears, airway resistance, and coughing.
