Cation channels of the TRPV1 (transient receptor potential vanilloid subtype 1) channel mediate neural reactions to a variety of damaging stimuli, such as heat, low pH, neuropeptides, and chemicals, such as the capsaicin molecule that gives peppers their hot flavour. The therapy of inflammatory pain may now have a new target in this receptor.
