Product Overview

Description

Peripherin is an intermediate filament subunit of approximately 57kDa, originally found in sensory neurons of the peripheral nervous system, and the protein is named after it (1). Subsequently, peripheral proteins were found in some sensory neurons and other neurons in the central nervous system, and they also acted as the main cytoskeletal protein in rat pheochromocytoma PC12 cells (2,3). Peripherin is expressed in certain neuroendocrine cells and insulin-producing cells of the pancreas, and autoantibodies against peripheral proteins can be seen in diabetes (4). It is also prominently expressed in certain tumors and the balloon-like axons of typical amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (5,6). Different types of neurons and nerve fibers can be identified based on the expression of peripheral protein, NF-L, and other markers (such as 7). There are multiple transcripts of a single peripherin gene, some of which encode proteins that produce proteins that cannot form intermediate filaments and induce the formation of pathological inclusions (8,9). Please note that the intermediate filament subunit peripheral protein (HGNC PRPH) is completely unrelated to the peripheral protein/RDS (HGNC PRPH2), which is a retinal protein belonging to the four transmembrane protein family.

Full Name

Peripherin

Alternative Names

This gene encodes a cytoskeletal protein found in neurons of the peripheral nervous system. The encoded protein is a type III intermediate filament protein with homology to other cytoskeletal proteins such as desmin; and is a different protein that the peripherin found in photoreceptors. Mutations in this gene have been associated with susceptibility to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
