Stroke Related Antibodies

Stroke is a cardiovascular condition brought on by a disruption in blood supply to a portion of the brain. This disruption is brought on by either a burst blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke) or an ischemic stroke (blood clot obstructing a blood artery). Ischemic strokes account for about 80% of all strokes.

Stroke is a high-risk factor for the development of vascular cognitive impairment (VCI), vascular dementia (VaD), and Alzheimer's disease (AD). 25-30% of ischemic stroke survivors will develop VCI or vascular dementia immediately or later.

Stroke Risk Factors

Autoimmune and infectious disorders share pathways that may lead to an elevated risk of ischemic strokes. In addition to cerebral vasculitis, autoimmune illnesses increase the risk of ischemic stroke through a variety of pathways. Increased inflammation may raise stroke risk and enhance the impact of classic stroke risk factors, which are common comorbidities in individuals with autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis. Glucocorticoids are frequently used in the treatment of autoimmune illnesses, which can impair control of classic stroke risk factors such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Similarly, certain viral illnesses cause ischemic stroke by infectious cerebral vasculitis. Infectious disorders, particularly chronic ones, contribute to systemic inflammation and are linked to an increased prevalence of classic stroke risk factors, such as HIV-induced atherosclerosis.
