Description
This protein has several names, including macrophage galectin-specific lectin or MAC2, galactoside binding protein or GALBP, or galectin 3 or gal 3. It is a highly conserved molecule with a molecular weight of approximately 30kDa. Galectin 3 is a member of the polygene family of 15 vertebrate lectins. All vertebrate lectins have one or in some cases two "carbohydrate recognition domains" (CRD), which are related to In combination with β-galactoside, β-galactoside is a protein on the surface of many cells (1-3). The unusual thing about Galectin 3 is that it also includes multiple proline, tyrosine, and glycine-rich repetitive sequences at the N-terminus, which allows the molecule to be oligomerized, thereby interacting with β-galactosides.
