Description

Ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase 1 (UCHL1) is an extremely abundant brain protein, which is only located in neurons. It was originally named PGP9.5 and was found to be a major protein spot on the brain extract 2D gel, which does not exist in similar gels from other tissues (1). Later, it was discovered that PGP9.5 protein is an enzyme that can cleave ubiquitin monomers from ubiquitin conjugates and polyubiquitin chains, resulting in the recycling of ubiquitin monomers and PGP9.5 was renamed UCHL1 to reflect this. Kind of enzyme activity (2). UCHL1 is an essential enzyme, and defects in UCHL1 protein expression are associated with Parkinson's disease (PD) and other more serious disease states (3-6). Genetic studies define PARK5 gene defect as the cause of PD in a German family, and the PARK5 gene encodes UCHL1 (7). In addition, UCHL1 may be released into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood after CNS damage and disease cause neuron loss. Therefore, the detection of this protein may provide information about CNS damage and recovery (8,9).
