Description

GAP43 is a kind of abundant protein, concentrated in a large number of developing neurons, especially at the growth tip, that is, the growth cone. One group found it because it became unregulated during toad optic nerve regeneration and named it "growth-associated protein 43". 43 refers to the apparent molecular weight on the SDS-PAGE gel (1). Due to the abnormal fluidity on SDS-PAGE, GAP43 was independently discovered by several other groups, so there are several alternative names, such as protein F1, pp46, neuregulin, neurin B-50 and calmodulin binding protein P -57, the number 46, Figures 50 and 57 reflect the apparent SDS-PAGE molecular weight (2). GAP43 has been extensively studied and is a major protein kinase C substrate that binds closely to calmodulin, which is mediated by the N-terminal IQ calmodulin binding motif (3). GAP43 can also be anchored to the plasma membrane by reversible palmitoylation on the two Cys residues near the N-terminus (4).

Immunogen

The C-terminal peptide of rat and mouse GAP43, KEDPEADQEHA, has N-terminal Cys added to allow chemical coupling with KLH carrier protein.
