Product Overview

Description

Synaptic signaling is the communication between cells that occurs at the synaptic level. Cells communicate with each other through direct contact (near secretory signals), short distances (paracrine signals), or long distances and scales (endocrine signals). Other cells form gap junctions, connecting their cytoplasm to The cytoplasm of adjacent cells. When the sending neuron is activated, the electrical impulse will propagate with it Axon. Once the impulse reaches the synapse, it triggers the release of neurotransmitters. This gene encodes a member of the pterin-dependent aromatic acid hydroxylase family. The encoded protein catalyzes the first and rate limiting step in the biosynthesis of serotonin, an important hormone and neurotransmitter. Mutations in this gene may be associated with psychiatric diseases such as bipolar affective disorder and major depression. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2016]
