RAGE also has at least one other agonistic ligand: high mobility group protein B1 (HMGB1). HMGB1 is an important intracellular DNA binding protein in chromatin remodeling. It can be passively released by necrotic cells or actively secreted by macrophages, natural killer cells and dendritic cells.
