Product Overview

Description

Rhodopsin is a protein in the mammalian retina that is responsible for the light sensitivity of rod cells, which in turn are responsible for vision at low light levels (1-4). Somewhat surprisingly, rhodopsin protein turned out to be a typical member of the seven-transmembrane G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily. Other GPCRs initiate signal transduction when they bind to specific ligands, and rhodopsin and bound ligands exist, especially vitamin A-related substance retinal. The light causes a conformational change of the receptor-bound retinal, which leads to a conformational change of the rhodopsin molecule.
