Description
Neurofilament is a 10nm or intermediate filament protein that is specifically found in neurons. It is mainly composed of three main proteins called NF-L, NF-M and NF-H, but other proteins may also exist. NF-H is a neurofilament high or heavy molecular weight peptide. It runs on 200-220 kDa SDS-PAGE gels and has some variability across species boundaries. In fact, the molecular size of the protein is much smaller, about 110kDa (1,2). The unusual SDS-PAGE mobility is partly due to the very high content of charged amino acids, especially the glutamate-rich regions, where the non-phosphorylated form runs at approximately 160 kDa on SDS-PAGE.
