Official Name

GSK3 alpha; GSK3 beta

Full Name

Glycogen synthase kinase 3

Alternative Names

Glycogen synthase kinase 3 is a serine/threonine protein kinase that mediates the addition of phosphate molecules to serine and threonine amino acid residues. Glycogen synthase was first discovered in 1980 as its regulatory kinase of the same name. Since then; GSK-3 has been identified as a kinase for more than 100 different proteins through various pathways. In mammals; GSK-3 is encoded by two paragenes GSK-3 alpha (GSK3A) and GSK-3 beta (GSK3B). GSK-3 has recently been involved in many diseases because it is associated with many diseases; including type 2 diabetes (type 2 diabetes); Alzheimer's disease; inflammation; cancer and bipolar disorder.
