Product Overview

Description

β-synuclein is a member of the synuclein family. The other two members are α-synuclein and γ-synuclein. Each protein is encoded by a different but related gene. α-synuclein was originally isolated from the electrical organs of torpedoes (1) as the main synaptic vesicle-associated protein, and direct homologs of α-synuclein have been found in all vertebrates. Later work linked the expression of α-synuclein to several human brain pathologies, so it is the main component of Lewy bodies in Parkinson's disease (2-5). β-synuclein is isolated as a component of the brain of normal and diseased patients, as a protein that is clearly related to α-synuclein but is different (6). The size of the human β-synuclein molecule is 134 amino acids, while the α-synuclein is 140 amino acids, and the N-terminal half of the two molecules are almost the same, while the C-terminal region varies more.
