Description
Ubiquitin is a globular protein composed of 76 amino acids with a molecular weight of approximately 8.5kDa. It was discovered by biochemical separation from bovine thymus tissue (1). It was found that the protein is highly conserved in amino acid sequence, can obviously be detected in every cell and tissue type, and is apparently universally expressed, and is called ubiquitin. Subsequent work has shown that ubiquitin plays an important role in targeting proteins for proteolytic degradation, but also has other important functions (2). Due to the continuous activity of the three families of ubiquitin activating enzyme (E1s), ubiquitin conjugating enzyme (E2s) and ubiquitin ligase (E3s), the protein to be degraded is covalently coupled to the C-terminus of ubiquitin.
