Description

The olfactory bulb is located in the forebrain of vertebrates and its function is to receive nerve endings/input from the nasal cavity. The sense of smell is related to the nerve tissue of the olfactory bulb. Immortalized mouse olfactory bulb cells (OBL21) are immortalized using a non-replicating retrovirus carrying the avian Myc gene. These cells are multipotent and are selected in the presence of G418. They express neuronal markers such as neurofilament (NF), tetanus toxin (TT) and A2B5, and have sodium channels. OBL21 cells are non-tumorigenic and have a similar morphology to primary cells. It is a valuable in vitro tool for research related to olfactory bulb function and biology.
