Description

The olfactory bulb is located in the forebrain of vertebrates and its function is to receive nerve endings/input from the nasal cavity. The sense of smell is related to the nerve tissue of the olfactory bulb. Immortalized mouse olfactory bulb cells (OBL24) are immortalized using a non-replicating retrovirus carrying the avian Myc gene. They express neuronal markers such as neurofilament (NF), tetanus toxin (TT), GFAP, A2B5, and HNK-1. It was found that OBL24 cells are non-tumorigenic and can incorporate BrdU. It is a valuable in vitro tool for research related to olfactory bulb function and biology.
