Product Overview

Description

Parvalbumin is a low molecular weight cytoplasmic calcium binding protein that contains the "EF hand" calcium binding motif, and is the first protein characterized in this subclass (1). Paralbumin is expressed in rapidly contracting muscles, brain and some endocrine tissues (2,3). In the brain, it is particularly concentrated in Purkinje cells and interneurons in the molecular layer, but it is also present in many cortical GABAergic interneurons. In most cases, these GABAergic interneurons express only one of the three calcium-binding proteins, namely paralbumin, calretinin, or calcium-binding protein (4-6). Each type of interneuron has different electrophysiological characteristics. Therefore, different types of interneurons can be identified and classified according to the content of these three proteins (7).
