The immature mouse NPCNIH Schwann cell (573C10) is a spontaneous immortal cell line established from homozygous npcnih/npcnih mice. NPC1 is the gene responsible for most Niemann-Pick disease type C (NPC) patients. In homozygous NPC1 protein was not detected in 573C10 cells. The 573C10 Schwann cell line can be used to study the pathogenesis of NPC neuropathy, the treatment of neurological deficits in NPC patients, and more generally, nerves, cholesterol, and sphingolipids.
