Description
Neurodegenerative diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and Huntington's disease The result of the gradual loss of neuron structure and function, Causes neuron death. Transthyretin (TTR or TBPA) is a transport protein in serum and cerebrospinal fluid, carrying the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4) and retinol-binding protein that binds to retinol. Transporting thyroxine is so named: transporting thyroxine and retinol. The liver secretes thyroxine into the blood, and the choroid plexus secretes TTR into the cerebrospinal fluid.
TTR was originally called prealbumin (or thyroxine-binding prealbumin) because it runs faster on electrophoresis gels than albumin.
