Bipolar Affective Disorder Drug Discovery Service
As a renowned bio-innovation company in the field of neuroscience, Creative Biolabs has been focusing on providing customized services such as in vitro and in vivo assays as well as the establishment of custom animal models to help you overcome the challenges in bipolar affective disorder (BPAD) drug discovery projects.
Introduction to BPAD Drug Discovery
BPAD, also known as manic depression disorder, is a debilitating, complex psychiatric disorder characterized by alternating periods of depression and mania. People with BPAD may experience strong mood swings and changes in thinking and behavior. Moreover, BPAD is a chronic, relapsing disease and patients are at 10 times the risk of suicide compared with the general population, making it a major public health problem. The disease appears to be caused by a combination of factors. In addition to genetic factors, biological characteristics, such as neurotransmitter or hormone imbalances in the brain, as well as environmental factors may also trigger the onset of BPAD. Although BPAD is a lifelong disorder, patients manage mood swings and other symptoms by following a treatment plan. Medications and psychological counseling are common treatment strategies for BPAD. Medication is beneficial for mood stabilization and symptom control while psychotherapy and counseling can help relieve symptoms and enable a person to manage BPAD. Unfortunately, currently available BPAD medications are insufficient for many patients. Therefore, it is an urgent task to develop more effective BPAD drugs.

Animal Models for BPAD
Animal models are attractive tools to accelerate the drug development of BPAD. However, most animal models of BPAD induce behaviors greatly similar to manic or depressive episodes, rather than a combination of them. Various animal models are available at Creative Biolabs including the ouabain-induced rat BPAD model. In addition, we can customize the appropriate animal model for your unique needs. Our animal models of BPAD have the following advantages:
- Facial validity for indicating the model mimics the symptoms of BPAD.
- Construct validity for showing the ability of the model to mimic the pathophysiological aspects of the disease.
- Predictive validity for evaluating drugs to treat BPAD.
