Description
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a serious and increasingly common age-related dementia characterized by the formation of senile plaques, which are the extracellular accumulation of insoluble proteins. Another characteristic of AD is the formation of neurofibrillary tangles inside neurons. The main component of senile plaques is β-amyloid, also known as Aβ, a major form of peptide with a length of 42 or 40 amino acids. The Aβ peptide is obtained by proteolysis from a larger protein film lozalized, called amyloid precursor protein (APP). Due to certain point mutations in the APP gene and mutations in presenilin and other genes, the deposition of Aβ increases. The presence of certain alleles of the ApoE gene also increases the possibility of progression to AD.
