Description
Bone morphogenetic protein 10 (BMP-10) was originally cloned from the embryonic heart, and expression data indicate that it plays a key role in the formation of embryonic heart trabeculae. BMP-10 shares>98% amino acid sequence identity among human, mouse and rat orthologs. BMP is a member of the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) superfamily. BMP-10 is synthesized as an inactive precursor BMP10 precursor (about 60 kD), and processed into active BMP-10 (about 14 kD) by proprotein convertase. Furin is the main invertase responsible for the production of BMP-10.
