Introduction

(Creative Biolabs Original)

Neurons are one of the basic structural and functional units of the nervous system. They can be divided into three regions: dendrites, axons, and cell bodies. Mature neurons are highly differentiated, and derived from neural stem cells. Under the stimulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF), neural stem cells continue to divide and differentiate into neural progenitor cells and finally into neurons, mature neurons do not divide after terminal differentiation. Their purpose is to receive, process, and transmit information in the central and peripheral nervous systems (PNS).

Neuronal Maturation Assays

  • Mature neuron marker and morphological assay

Specific expressed proteins serve as markers of nerve cells, allowing for the distinction between different neuronal subtypes and cells of varying maturity. These markers facilitate the identification of mature neurons within the CNS and PNS while also elucidating the differentiation status of neural progenitor cells, providing a foundation for the investigation of neurological diseases.

As neurons mature, they begin to develop more solid connections to their substrate and the surrounding cells. This presents as an increase in both the electrical activity of the neuron and an increase in its receptiveness to the electrical activity of other cells. Electrophysiological indicators provide further evidence of the function of mature neurons, thus enabling researchers to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the neuronal maturation process.

  • High-throughput single-cell analysis

At Creative Biolabs, the high-throughput single-cell analysis platform is capable of analyzing thousands of individual cells simultaneously. This technology offers a more profound comprehension of the integrated function of multiple pathways in neuronal maturation within the nervous system and the diversity of mature neurons.
