Introduction
Astrocytes represent one of the most numerous and complex types of glial cells within the central nervous system (CNS). Astrocytes fulfill a multitude of functions within the nervous system. These include maintaining ion homeostasis, controlling the clearance and turnover of neurotransmitters, providing metabolic support, constructing the neurovascular barrier, shaping the neuro-glial-vascular unit, and regulating the formation and operation of the glymphatic system. Astrocyte function is implicated in the pathogenesis of various neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and depression (MDD), and as a result are a focus for potential therapeutic targets.
Astrocyte Assays
The tri-culture system of neurons, astrocytes, and microglia offers a robust platform for neuroscience research, enabling the simulation of intricate in vivo environments and facilitating a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between neurons and glia and their involvement in diverse pathologies. This system is invaluable for elucidating the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases and neuroinflammation. Additionally, it is a powerful tool for drug screening and the development of new therapies.
Astrocytosis (also known as astrogliosis, reactive astrocytosis, or reactive astrogliosis) refers to a series of molecular, cellular and functional changes in astrocytes during CNS injury or disease. These changes typically manifest as astrocyte proliferation, morphological changes, and upregulation of glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP) expression. In diseases such as AD, PD, the overactivity or dysfunction of astrocytes can contribute to disease exacerbation. Our system reliably triggers astrocytosis and tracks its development over time, making it a perfect model for testing novel therapeutic agents or for providing insights helpful for early diagnosis and disease assessment.
At Creative Biolabs, our astrocyte assays offer reliable and precise data for your research needs. We invite you to contact us to discuss your project plans in detail.
