Description
Primary cells undergo only a predetermined and limited number of cell divisions in culture. After doubling the population (the number varies with species, cell type, and culture conditions), the primary cells enter a so-called state of replication senescence, in which they no longer divide. To overcome aging, there are several methods for immortalizing mammalian cells in culture. Simian virus 40 (SV40) T antigen has been proven to be the simplest and most reliable drug for immortalizing many different cell types. Recent studies have also shown that SV40 T antigen can induce telomerase activity in infected cells.
