Description
ALDH2 is a member of the aldehyde dehydrogenase family. In the human brain, ALDH2 is the main aldehyde metabolizing enzyme, which is essential for the metabolism and detoxification of endogenous and exogenous aldehyde substrates. Correspondingly, recent studies report that the level of ALDH2 in the brains of patients with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease is dysregulated, indicating that toxic aldehydes are the cause of neurodegenerative diseases and potential therapeutic targets.
