Overview of Conjunctivitis
As we all know, the conjunctiva is a thin and transparent tissue, which is mainly located in the white part of the eye. Conjunctivitis is a collective term for a group of diseases characterized by inflammation of the conjunctiva. What's more, this disease affects many people and poses an economic and social burden. The main symptom of the disease is conjunctival vasodilation, which further leads to conjunctival hyperemia and edema, often accompanied by secretions. While there are many types of conjunctivitis, viral, allergic and bacterial are the three most common. It is worth noting that it does not usually affect vision. In most cases, the infection clears up without medical attention, but bacterial conjunctivitis requires therapy with antibiotic eye drops or ointment.

Therapeutic Approaches
While there is no effective therapy, a variety of strategies may help relieve symptoms. For example, for viral conjunctivitis, treatment is based on the provision of supportive care, including artificial tears, cold compresses and occasional topical antihistamines if itching is prominent. In the presence of specific criteria, topical corticosteroids may be required to reduce symptoms. In the management of suspected bacterial conjunctivitis, empiric therapy with broad-spectrum topical antimicrobials has been shown to play a crucial role in shortening the disease course and reducing the risk of infection.
Animal Models of Conjunctivitis
Currently, there are few studies on conjunctivitis, therefore, further in-depth understanding of the molecular basis is necessary. Thence, developing animal models showing clinical symptoms is crucial for understanding the disease. To establish new therapeutic methods, various animal models have been developed over the past few years. Current animal models are based on sensitization to a few allergens, such as ovalbumin and ragweed pollen. Animal models can provide powerful tools for effectively exploring the pathophysiology of conjunctivitis and uncovering the underlying molecular mechanisms and potential treatment strategies. So far, diverse animal species were used. Starting with the guinea pig model of allergic conjunctivitis used to assess pharmacological aspects, new models have been developed that mimic the main features of ocular allergy, including rats and mice. Notably, mice are currently the species of choice for conjunctivitis models.
Cell Culture Models
Cell culture models are beneficial for studying the pathology of conjunctivitis and developing new treatments. A good cellular model is accompanied by a well-relevant result. Furthermore, cell culture models of conjunctivitis are experimentally controlled systems, so results are more reproducible than those obtained from animal models. Once a culture model is established, multiple mechanisms can be used to simulate injury and study the effectiveness of neuroprotective therapies.
Drug Development
Allergic conjunctivitis is a commonly explored disease due to the availability of multiple models. These models allow the screening of novel drugs targeting inflammatory pathways or mediators involved in allergic responses. In addition, immunomodulators alter normal pathways and provide a steroid-sparing alternative for allergic conjunctivitis. With extensive experience and diverse models, Creative Biolabs is the best choice for your conjunctivitis drug development projects.
