Human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) can be obtained from somatic cells by ectopic expression of a defined set of reprogramming factors: Oct4, Sox2, Klf4 and c-Myc. These hiPSCs have the characteristics of self-renewal and pluripotency with human ES cells, so they can be used as renewable sources for all differentiated cell types in the human body. Human iPSCs can be generated from patients with almost any genetic background. Retroviruses are an effective tool for transferring inheritable genes into the genome of dividing cells. VSV-G pseudotyped retroviruses have a wide range of targets, including mammalian and non-mammalian cells, and are usually silenced in ES cells. Retroviruses are often used to generate iPSCs due to their high reprogramming efficiency. The human iPS cell reprogramming retrovirus kit provides the opportunity to generate iPSCs from various tissues and cell types.
