Description

AAV9 (Adeno-associated virus serotype 9) is currently one of the most effective natural serotypes at penetrating the blood-brain barrier (BBB), allowing for widespread distribution throughout the entire brain and spinal cord after intravenous injection. Its capsid protein binds to cells via glycosylation receptors and has demonstrated long-term gene expression stability in primates.

AAV9 is already approved for clinical treatment of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). In basic research, AAV9 is commonly used to deliver the CRISPR-Cas9 system to the entire brain for constructing neurodegenerative disease models. Furthermore, its ability to target heart muscle also makes it useful in cardiovascular disease research.
