Product Overview

Description

Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) is an important enzyme responsible for the production of L-dopa from the amino acid tyrosine. Levodopa is the direct precursor of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which itself can be processed into the neurotransmitters epinephrine and norepinephrine (also known as epinephrine and norepinephrine, respectively). Neurons that use dopamine, epinephrine, or norepinephrine, collectively called catecholamines, must express TH. The distribution of TH in the brain is very limited, but it is highly expressed in the cells where it is found. Therefore, TH antibody can be used to identify catecholaminergic neurons. TH-positive neurons in rats are located in cell clusters, most of which are located in the brainstem, especially the substantia nigra and locus coeruleus (1,2). Cell clusters are usually referenced by classification schemes based on Dahlstrӧm and Fuxe, which label cells as cells in groups A1 - A17 and C1 to C3 (2). Subpopulations of neurons are located in the olfactory bulb, habenula, and retina. TH-positive cells have also been found in the subpopulations of the adrenal medulla, sympathetic ganglia, sensory ganglia, and enteric ganglia (2).
