Description

Caffeine (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine) is a methylxanthine alkaloid that can act as a central nervous system stimulant and can be used to increase blood pressure and reduce fatigue. Caffeine is naturally found in leaves, seeds, nuts and many plants. It is also known to have an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting adenosine monophosphate phosphodiesterase. Today, many common beverages, including coffee, tea, soda and energy drinks, contain varying amounts of caffeine to reduce drowsiness and improve performance. At normal doses, caffeine can usually improve reaction time, wakefulness, attention and motor coordination. However, excessive caffeine in the body can cause nervousness, bone loss, headache, anxiety, insomnia and even death.
