The human CACNA1A gene encodes the pore-forming subunit of Cav2.1, which is a voltage-gated P/Q calcium channel.Contains auxiliary subunits that regulate gating and pharmacological properties, while inwardly rectifying potassium channels allow the membrane potential to change with changes in extracellular K+.CACNA1A mutations are responsible for a variety of genetic neurological diseases, including familial hemiplegic migraine, type 2 paroxysmal ataxia, and spinocerebellar ataxia type 6 epilepsy.The Cav2.1 channel expressed in neurons is a therapeutic target for pain.
