Description
ERT2 is a Tamoxifen-responsive element that is normally located in the cytoplasm. However, upon addition of Tamoxifen, it changes its location to the cell nucleus. Cre can only exert its function in the cell nucleus, so fusion with ERT2 allows for control over Cre. The fusion of two ERT2 moieties is necessary for more precise localization and reduced leaky expression. Only a small amount of Cre is required for its function, so controlling leakage is crucial.
